Crystallization of the Xanthoria parietina

The crystallization of parietina of Xanthoria parietina kit makes it possible to discuss an example of diversification of living creatures without modification of the genome thanks to symbiosis.
It involves showing that the association of the two symbionts (belonging to very distant phylogenetic groups) is at the origin of the appearance of a new organism (a chimera) characterised by a new metabolism allowing the colonisation of new ecological niches.

This complete kit allows the extraction of the parietin (with acetone); making it it crystallise, then mounting it between slide and cover slip in order to be able to observe it (polarizing microscope necessary).
Complete instructions and a crystal determination chart are provided.

Composition (for 20 pairs of students):

• 2 bags of Xanthoria parietina, 2 x 1 g
  
• 1 dropper bottle of crystallisation reagent
  
• 1 bottle of 50 ml of acetone
  
• 2 dropper bottles
  
• 1 box of 50 76 x 26 mm glass slides
  
• 1 box of 100 24 x 24 mm cover slips
  
• 1 bottle of clear nail polish
  
• A chart for the determination of crystalline lichenic substances
