The front of the halter is replaced by a second atrophied wing.
The structure of this wing is ciliated on the periphery, it is often balloon shaped. This is explained by the fact that the wing is formed in the wild Drosophila of two superimposed and adherent layers, and the homeotic wing seems to have lost the adhesion between the two layers.
