The nitrogenous medium is suitable for the culture of all cyanobacterial strains.
The medium without nitrogen is used to induce the formation of heterocysts (specialised cells in the fixation of atmospheric nitrogen) and allow their observation in filamentous species.
The carbonaceous medium is used to induce the formation of stromatolites in a culture of cyanobacteria Synechocystis. When cultured on sterile glass slides, they form a biofilm on the surface of which the appearance of stromatolitic crystals is observed after 5 to 7 days of culture in a carbon medium under optimal culture conditions.
