Les marques de la fragmentation continentale: marqueurs de collision ou d'extension
This model illustrates the renewal of the oceanic lithosphere during the divergence of the plates surrounding the dorsals.

Experimental principle:
A layer of washing cream, a layer of shaving foam and a thin layer of sand are introduced into the model (ref. SABLMER). Each layer is deposited in this order in the model in the retracted position. The model is then stretched by gently pulling on both handles.

When the three layers stretch, we observe the rise of the washing cream, modelling the mantle material, between the dorsal plates, here made of sand and foam. This new material filling the rift is responsible for the renewal of the oceanic lithosphere.
