Asteroid impacts, volcanic eruptions, the appearance of species or major biological crises: many events have marked the history of our planet.
The new publication from BRGM invites the reader to travel through geological time, thanks to the witnesses left in the Earth's subsoil.
The book, published by Editions du BRGM, reviews the history of the planet Earth and describes the different forms of life during geological time.
Richly illustrated, the chapters present the witnesses of biological extinctions, major climatic changes, great volcanic episodes and asteroid impacts.
The journey begins with the Hadean, the first period of this long history, named after Hades, Greek god of the underworld.
It is without rocky witnesses, except for rare exceptions. After having sailed through the Archean, the Proterozoic, the Phanerozoic, the journey ends in the Quaternary, the most recent period on the geological time scale.
This period is characterized by the development of glacial and interglacial cycles and by the wide diffusion of the Homo genus in Eurasia.
In addition, the book reviews the construction of the geological time scale, an indispensable tool that is constantly updated by geologists.
The BRGM, a specialist in subsoil, illustrates through this book concepts that are difficult to grasp, yet handled daily by researchers.
