The air cushion table has a flat glass surface on which the recording paper rests. Compressed air is routed to the pucks through lightweight hoses. The air escaping under the pucks lets them gravitate over the recording paper thus minimising friction.
The movement of the puck is marked by a spark recording: in the air hoses there are thin metal chains which establish the connection with the spark generator. In contact with the puck, a spark is formed in the middle of it and leaves a mark on the recording paper. Since the pucks weigh 550 g, their movement is not restricted by the pipes or the spark-wire.
